2nd Thatcham Group visit to the seaside

We travelled to West Wittering by coach, minibus and car arriving on site at 10am, on 18th July 2009. The boys and girls and most of the adults were soon on the beach playing, and as can been seen from the photos, made a huge sandcastle. The chief engineer and construction expert was Gavin Davis.

The weather for the day was warm with sunny intervals. The sea was very cold, but this didn't deter everybody from having a dip. Sadly the day was soon over and we had to return to Thatcham. The trip was such a success it will be repeated annually.

First Beaver Leader looses her battle again cancer

Christine Sturmey, who was 2nd Thatcham's first Beaver Leader, sadly lost her fight against cancer, aged only 59, on 3rd July 2009. Christine, who helped to set up the Colony in September 1986, stayed as Leader until July 2000, when she left to spend more time with her family. Her two sons, Mark and Neil, were amongst the first Beavers in the Colony.

Christine had previously been a Brownie Leader, having joined Brownies in Swindon aged seven, and not leaving until she joined 2nd Thatcham to start up the Beaver Colony. The Colony proved to be a huge sucess, and had a long list of boys wanting to join right from the start.
