2nd Thatcham Beaver Scouts

Beaver Scouts are young people usually aged between six and eight years old. They belong to the first and youngest Section in the Scouting family. Young people can join Beaver Scouts in the three months leading up to their sixth birthday. They can move to the next Section, Cub Scouts, between eight and eight years six months.

Easily recognised by their distinctive turquoise sweatshirts, Beaver Scouts enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and helping others. They usually meet together once a week in a Beaver Scout Colony.

Some Beaver Scout Colonies also organise Sleepovers. These are often the first time a young person spends a night away from home. They take place in suitable buildings, often Scout centres.

About our Colony

We are part of 2nd Thatcham Scout Group and enjoy many activities including handicrafts, games, singing, trips and visits, sleepovers and many joint activities with other Beaver Colonies within our District and other sections of our Group. For example we quite often visit Cub and Scout camps for the day and join in their activities, which can include archery and climbing.

When a new member has been with us for about 4 weeks they will then be invested into the Colony. There is a very short ceremony where the new Beaver Scout will hopefully have learnt the Beaver Scout Promise, but this is not essential as they can say it along with the Leader. After they have completed their Promise they will be presented with the Group scarf, badges and a coloured woggle. Also a certificate welcoming them to Scouting.

How much will it cost?

One off joining fee of £10. Subscription fee £15, due at the beginning of each School term. Also every now and again we will be asking for small contributions towards activities and fee's for trips and visits, but they are always good value for money.

Don't be embarrassed to mention to any of the Leaders if you have trouble in paying any of the subscription charges. We will be only too happy to help, we do not want any of our Young People to miss out on any of our activities.

Beaver Scout Badges

We will be working towards our Beavers receiving badges that can be sewn onto their Beaver jumper as shown on the next page. There are five activity badges that can be awarded and some of these can be done at home. If you require any more information regarding this then please speak to a Leader. There are also a couple of staged activity badges, these include swimming, musician, and IT, again speak to a Leader.

Uniform is a turquoise jumper and navy trousers (not essential), a burgundy and pale blue scarf (necker) and a coloured woggle.
