Scouts aims to build and develop young people’s confidence, sense of adventure and outdoor skills, as well as encouraging them to explore their beliefs and attitudes and be creative. It offers them the independence to put these skills into practice at camps and even on international trips. Scouts are encouraged to work together and take the lead on all sorts of projects, from community based work to planning games and activities for their meetings.
2nd Thatcham Scout Group is a thriving Scout Group that meets every week, on different nights, at their own Scout Hut behind the Memorial Hall in Thatcham. As part of the UK Scout Association the group provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for young people in our community.
The Scout Association has been providing services to young people in our communities for over 100 years, and today provides activities and personal development opportunities for over 400,000 young people aged 6 to 25 in the UK in a co-educational setting. At 2nd Thatcham we provide a balanced programme of activities for girls and boys from 6 to 14 years of age. The age ranges are split between Beaver Scouts (ages 6 to 8 years), Cub Scouts (ages 8 to 10 years) and Scout (ages 10 to 14 years. At the age of 14 Scouts can move to one of two Explorer Units run in Thatcham by the Scout district.
At 2nd Thatcham we have two Beaver Scout troops that meet on a Monday or Wednesday night, two Cub Scout troops that meet on a Monday or Friday night and one Scout troop that meets on a Thursday. Our group is part of Thatcham Hundred Scout District which brings together the Scout groups in Thatcham, Cold Ash, Woolhampton, Hermitage and Compton.
Adult leaders and supporters provide balanced programmes to their Scouts to ensure that all activities take place within a safe environment. Leaders receive training and must be DBS checked to ensure their suitability to volunteer with children.
